High Tech Center, Adaptive Technology

Strong written communication skills and the ability to gather information from both print and digital sources are essential for success in college. However, students with significant visual, orthopedic or learning disabilities often face challenges with writing, reading and using computers. These difficulties, compounded by repeated setbacks, can lead some students to believe that the time and effort required to complete assignments make full participation in college life impossible.

To help address these barriers, the High Tech Center at Citrus College was established to provide students with disabilities access to adaptive computer technology. This support empowers students to overcome academic challenges, achieve their educational goals and prepare for future career opportunities.

HOW CAN ADAPTIVE TECHNOLOGY HELP ME AT CITRUS COLLEGE?

Even if you already use a computer or don't believe you need adaptive technology, it may still be worthwhile to visit the High Tech Center and explore the tools available to you.

The staff are highly experienced in working with students of all skill levels — including those with little or no prior computer experience — and can introduce you to technology that may enhance your learning.

If you do find something that you believe would be helpful to you, Citrus College offers three ways to access adaptive technology.

Classroom technology
If you find that you can benefit from a particular type of adaptive technology in the classroom or in a campus computer lab, not already equipped with it, the High Tech Center and your counselor can work toward getting the appropriate technology installed where you need it. This kind of request can be time consuming and should be done as early as possible.

TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE

The High Tech Center staff can assists students by:

discovering whether adaptive technology can be of assistance to you in working with the computer and academic information.
teaching effective use of adaptive technology.
providing educational materials in alternate formats.
working with the college faculty and staff to improve access to campus computer resources and information.
