MIKAELA GUTIERREZ
BIOTECHNOLOGY ALUMNA BUILDS A CAREER PROTECTING WATER

"My name is Mikaela Gutierrez, and I graduated from Citrus College in 2016 with an Associate of Science degree in Pre-Allied Health and a certificate of achievement in biomanufacturing.
"Following graduation, I was hired as a laboratory technician at Eurofins Eaton Analytical in Monrovia, where I performed water testing to identify and quantify bacteria in different water sources. After my first year, I was promoted to a scientist position and microbiology group leader. The additional knowledge and training I received at Eurofins helped me to secure a position in 2018 as a laboratory quality assurance specialist with the Honolulu Board of Water Supply.
"In my current position, I am responsible for ensuring that laboratories maintain accreditation from the state of Hawaii, conducting field and laboratory internal audits, performing data validation and compliance and regulatory monitoring, writing and revising standard operating procedures, and notifying the state and the public when the quality of water is compromised. I love my job in that I have an opportunity to help deliver the best quality of water to the public and to ensure that the water provided is safe and regulated.
"The biotechnology program at Citrus College prepared me very well with the necessary skills for an entry-level position within the industry. The laboratory training helped prepare me for the hands-on work required of the job, from media making and autoclave sterilization to good documentation practices.
"I entered my field feeling confident and knowledgeable — I was prepared with the tools needed for success. Completing the biotechnology training program at Citrus College definitely helped with my career in the biotechnology industry!"
