Congratulations to Sebastian Stjernbo, a Citrus College architecture student who has been helping to build a solar-powered mobile shower trailer that will provide services to people experiencing homelessness.

Sebastian, who grew up in Sweden, moved to Southern California in his late-teens and enrolled at Citrus College in early 2020. Three weeks into his first semester, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. For the next two years, Sebastian took courses online and attempted to forge new friendships and connections while learning remotely.

"I was fortunate to have some exceptional professors during that time," Sebastian said. "Since coming back in-person, it has been nothing short of an amazing experience, collaborating with enthusiastic fellow students and forming meaningful connections with instructors."

During the past year, Sebastian was invited by Citrus College instructor Tommy Reyes to join the Citrus College Architecture Club. In collaboration with Hillside LA and California State University, Los Angeles, the Architecture Club is nearly finished building the solar shower.

"Working collaboratively on this project provided me with a glimpse into the workings of a genuine architectural firm, reinforcing my passion for this field," Sebastian said. "The experience has been nothing short of incredible, allowing me to enhance my teamwork skills, delve into construction principles and deepen my understanding of the building techniques vital to architects."

Sebastian credits Reyes for inspiring him and other students.

"His ideas for the program are incredibly innovative, encompassing not only the essential requirements for transferring to a university but also crucial skills for the professional field," Sebastian said. "What resonated with me the most was his unwavering positive energy and his sincere dedication to helping others."

Looking ahead, Sebastian hopes to become a licensed architect. As he explores the specific area of design that he wants to pursue, he expressed gratitude to the campus community.

"The college's emphasis on real-life projects and club involvement enriches the overall educational journey," Sebastian said. "The supportive atmosphere and engaging extracurricular activities contribute to a well-rounded education, equipping students with the skills needed for success in their respective fields."

Thank you for your service to Citrus College, Sebastian! The campus community can't wait to see what you accomplish next!
