Congratulations to Nathan Palmer, a 2023 Citrus College graduate who majored in biology and physics and was recently named a Key of Knowledge recipient at the 60th annual Achievement Awards ceremony. This fall, he will attend UCLA and study biochemistry.

While at Citrus College, Nathan took part in a variety of programs, including Pathways to STEM and the Blue Note Swing Orchestra. A lead alto saxophonist, Nathan played at countless concerts and had the opportunity to perform with guest artists Wayne Bergeron, Jay Jennings and Oz Noy.

"I'd especially like to highlight instructors Gino Munoz and Ken Edwards for allowing me to continue developing my musicianship and improvisation in the Blue Note," Nathan said. "Not only are they great individuals, they are also incredible musicians and are both excellent at bringing the best out of those who want to excel."

In the scientific realm, Nathan praised instructor Terry Miles, who helped him develop his skills and deepen his knowledge of chemistry. He said he also enjoyed participating in Pathways to STEM, where he received an opportunity to do research for the Oak Crest Institute of Science and the USC Wrigley Institute for Marine and Environmental Sciences on Catalina Island.

"This program really got me excited about getting more into research as a community college student, so I applied for the summer research program through Citrus College and was accepted into the summer program at California State University, Fullerton," he said. "There, I got to work full time in a biochemistry lab and develop a research project that I later presented at two different research symposiums."

As a biochemistry major, Nathan hopes to go into biomedical research and potentially become a professor.

Though he will soon become a Bruin, he won't forget his time at Citrus College.

"The small class sizes also allowed me to become close to many of my professors, giving me access to a wealth of advice and support in terms of my academics, as well as advice regarding transferring and my career goals," he said. "In short, being at Citrus was exciting, and each semester brought inspiration that fueled my success."

Thank you for your service to Citrus College, Nathan! The campus community can't wait to see what you accomplish next!
