Congratulations to Anthony Mardoyan, a math and physics major, who is making the most of his final semester at Citrus College!
Last month, Anthony was presented with the prestigious Virginia Coffey Scholarship during the Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS) honor society's spring convention. An academic award designed to recognize the organization's most outstanding scholars, this $1,250 scholarship is presented to the two applicants who received the highest ratings in the state.
"Receiving this scholarship feels academically reassuring," Anthony said. "It means that the work I put into my classes was enough for people to choose to invest in my pursuits."
As impressive as Anthony's accomplishment is, it's not his only notable achievement this semester. In late March, he also received news that he is a 2025 Phi Theta Kappa All-California Award recipient. One of only 116 community college students in the state to receive this honor, Anthony earned this recognition because of his grades, campus leadership and community service.
"I've made academics my main focus while I've been here at Citrus," Anthony said. "To receive these awards is very validating. They make me want to keep going, keep working hard and keep pursuing academic excellence."
A graduate of Glendora High School, Anthony originally enrolled at Citrus College because of costs. "I had considered attending a four-year school, but the financial burden drove me away from it," he said. "Plus, my mom went to Citrus College for nursing. That kind of pushed me in the direction of following in her footsteps."
During his time on campus, Anthony has been active with the college's AGS chapter. In fact, he has served as the chapter's president for the 2024-2025 academic year. "My favorite moments, hands down, have been participating and serving as a leader in Alpha Gamma Sigma," he said. "We've taken service trips to the beach, food banks and many others. I've had a lot of fun volunteering with the club and meeting people within it. I've also learned what it means to be a leader."
Anthony will be graduating this Friday and plans to transfer to a four-year university. His goal is to earn a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and to enroll in an accelerated master's degree program. He says his long-term goal is to gain the expertise and skills necessary to engage in research that is specially focused on embedded systems. "Something like medical tech or satellites would be cool to work with," he said.
Way to go Anthony! You make Citrus College proud!
