Galactic Heroes and Villains Hair Shows dazzles audience

Excited guests filled the Haugh Performing Arts Center on the evening of April 30 for the Galactic Heroes and Villains Hair Show. Hosted by the Citrus College Cosmetology Program with support from the Citrus College Foundation, the student competition and runway show is a popular event designed to raise funds for future cosmetology activities while showcasing student talent.

Dancers opened the show with a dynamic performance that was enhanced with music from the student band Night Shift, as well as sets and lighting designed by emerging theatre technology students. As student models strutted down the runway, they showed off unique hair, costume and makeup designs to a cheering crowd. A panel of judges, including Robert Sammis, director of human resources, and Christina M. Garcia, director of the Citrus College Foundation, judged contestants in the following categories: avant-garde hair, makeup and wigs/extensions.

"The Hair Show is an awesome event that allows us to overlook conventional standards of beauty for one night and experiment with art using our imaginations," said cosmetology student Lauren DeMoss, who was awarded first place in the avant-garde category along with teammates Elizabeth Meza and Samantha Vara. "I am grateful that Citrus College gave us the opportunity to show what we can do with makeup and costume design."

"Citrus College is teeming with bright and creative students," said the college superintendent/president. "Many of the students in cosmetology dream of working in Hollywood, opening their own shops or joining successful beauty salons. Events such as the Hair Show give them the confidence and experience to continue pursuing such goals."
