Shout out to Julianna Gasca, a Citrus College soccer player and student journalist, who recently participated in a "Women in Sports" panel discussion as part of Women's History Month in March.
A longtime soccer player, Julianna knew she wanted to compete at the collegiate level after graduating from Rowland High School. When she spoke to coaching staff and representatives from the Citrus College Athletics program, she knew it was the right school for her. "I had opportunities at other universities and junior colleges, but Citrus was so welcoming and inviting," she said. "I felt at home here."
Before long, Julianna had developed strong connections on campus. "I would describe it as a family that wants to win," she said. "You get so close to everyone, yet there is always a drive to be better on the field, in the classroom and in whatever else you choose to pursue. I am so proud of our program and the work I put in over the past two years."
Of course, soccer isn't the only area where Julianna has invested her time. She is a staff member on the student newspaper, the Clarion, and a student worker for the athletics program. In addition, she is pursuing an associate degree in psychology. "Psychology was not something I planned on pursuing, but Citrus gave me the opportunity to explore that interest," she said. "Now, my academic goals are to finish my associate degrees in psychology and communication, then transfer to a four-year university. Ultimately, I hope to earn a bachelor's degree in communications."
Julianna will be graduating from Citrus College at the end of this semester. After transferring and earning her bachelor's degree, she plans on working in the sports industry. "I want to pursue sports, not just as an athlete, but as a professional," she said. "I want to get into sports media or sports public relations for either a college or a professional team."
However, Julianna says she will always be grateful for her time at Citrus College. "These have been some of the best two years of my life. I have been able to explore myself and my interests in several ways," she said. "I have played the sport I love, explored interests I never knew I had and started my career – all because of the opportunities I have had on this campus."
Thank you for making Citrus College part of your journey, Julianna. We know you have a bright future ahead of you!
