When Jeniffer Carmona-Solis enrolled at Citrus College last year, she couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and nostalgia. Her mom and sister had both graduated from the registered dental assisting (RDA) program, and now it was her turn to carry on the family tradition.

Olga Solis, Jeniffer's mom, completed the program 15 years ago. She had come to Citrus College in search of an academic pathway that would lead to a good career in a short amount of time. "I loved how professional the program was and, most of all, I loved being a registered dental assistant," Olga said.

Daisy Carmona, Jeniffer's sister, graduated from the program in 2022. When Jeniffer realized that her job at an animal hospital wasn't a good fit, Daisy suggested registered dental assisting. "She told me to give it a try," Jeniffer explained. "She suggested I enroll for one semester and reminded me that I could always change my mind if I didn't like it."

Soon, Jeniffer found a career field she was passionate about. One particularly memorable moment in the program was her internship at a local periodontist office. "A highlight was working with Dr. Ammar," she said. "On my first day, I did a solo surgery with him. It was such a high being able to put all my education into action. I knew I belonged in the dental world!"

Of course, her journey wasn't always easy. "I'm not going to lie," she said. "The RDA program isn't for the weak. I had multiple breakdowns and debated about dropping the program. The only reason I didn't quit was because of the amazing instructors. Every one of them was so supportive, helpful and would never say no when I asked for extra help."

Jeniffer recently graduated from the RDA program, having earned her radiology, infection control, coronal polish and sealant certifications. After her application to the dental board is approved, she will begin working as a registered dental assistant. Jeniffer's ultimate goal is to become a hygienist and eventually apply to dental school. She hopes to become an oral surgeon and start her own practice. "I know I have a long road ahead of me, but I also know it's going to be worth it," she said.

Congratulations Jeniffer! We are so proud of you!
