Student excels as first Black Scholars Student Ambassador

As the first Black Scholars Student Ambassador at Citrus College, Jor'Denay Collier-Brown spends a lot of time helping her peers.

In her current role, Collier-Brown frequently checks in on students and updates them on school-wide events and Black Scholars activities. In addition, she serves as a mentor and organizes events and fundraisers.

"I listen to what Black students are saying they need, and I advocate for it until we have it," she said.

Launched in 2021, the Black Scholars program is geared toward promoting Black excellence through history, scholarship and community. Led by co-advisors La Quirshia Fennell and Dominic Jacquet, the program helps students thrive in the classroom and be prepared to transfer or enter the workforce.

Collier-Brown credits the program with helping her grow professionally, academically and as a mentor.

"The more I advocate for and mentor members of the Black community, the more I fall in love with my community," Collier-Brown said.

In addition to serving as an ambassador, Collier-Brown is pursuing five associate degrees in early childhood education, child development, child and adolescent development, psychology and sociology.

After graduating from Citrus College this month, Collier-Brown will transfer to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where she will major in early childhood studies.

"I have had a great experience at Citrus College," she said. "I felt the love and support every step of the way."
