Citrus College to host world premiere of play written by accomplished actor, playwright
Glendora, Calif. (March 19, 2026) – A new play developed by Citrus College students and Nick Dillenburg, a successful stage actor who is currently starring in the North American tour of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," will have its world premiere on campus in early April.
Loosely based on "Love's Labor's Lost," an early comedy by William Shakespeare, the new production, titled "One Final Beautiful Impossible Year," follows a group of young women who vow to focus on school and their friendships until they're forced to plan a Halloween party and Valentine's Day gala with an all-boys school.
Directed by Aubrey Saverino, theatre arts instructor, the play will have six performances between April 3 and April 12 in the college's Little Theatre, adjacent to the Haugh Performing Arts Center.
The idea for the play, which also features live music, dancing and visual art, came from a conversation between Saverino and Dillenburg. She recalled telling Dillenburg about wanting a contemporary, large-cast play with plenty of age-appropriate and diverse roles for the student body.
When Dillenburg came to campus in fall 2025 to workshop the play, he and Saverino engaged with students as they shared their experiences of growing up.
"We'd ask questions, listen and discuss, and then he would write a scene or speech to incorporate their thoughts and come back and share it with us the next day," Saverino said. "So, our students' thoughts and experiences are woven into the fabric of this play."
Over the past few months, Dillenburg returned to Citrus College while on breaks from "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" to work with students to refine dialogue and other aspects of the production.
"Without question, this play is better because of the contributions of our students," Saverino said. "I am so grateful to them and to our entire program for bringing this play to life."
Amberly Chamberlain, dean of visual and performing arts, said her entire division is appreciative of Saverino and Dillenburg for their efforts.
"As a former theatre student, the opportunity to originate a role is a dream come true," Chamberlain said. "Being a part of an original work is exciting, challenging and one of the greatest experiences an actor can have to stretch their imagination, apply learned classroom techniques, and build upon their artistry and craft."
Tickets for all six performances can be purchased by visiting haughpac.com or calling 626-963-9411.
