My Citrus Story- Lorry Williams
As if they are now, and later they shall be.
I dropped out of school at 16 years old. For the next two decades, I raised my son on tips from working in restaurants. After 25 years, I returned to school at Citrus College and found a passion for learning that I thought I had lost. It was an exciting new adventure.
I finished courses for my library tech certificate and started in the Hayden Library as a student aide. I was hired on a part-time basis five months later, and shortly after that, became a part-time permanent employee. Later, I was hired full-time as the head of my department. Having finished my bachelor’s degree from Cal State Long Beach, I am working toward my master’s degree in library science. Meanwhile, I teach classes in the Library Tech Program. It’s ironic that in doing so, I have come full circle — from student to teacher.
Citrus College has been more than a school for me; it has transformed my life and in the process provided me opportunities to achieve more than I would have dared imagine so many years ago. All the people I’ve encountered — the counselors, teachers, and fellow staff members — have contributed to my success through their friendship, help, and encouragement. I am extremely grateful for all of them. They are like my family, and like my family, they are remembered often in my prayers.
No matter where I end up in this life, I will always remember Citrus College as the place that gave me a second chance in life. Thank you, Citrus.
