History 103 is a course designed to introduce students to the civilizations of the Ancient World. Primary attention will be given to urban cultures that developed writing systems, trade networks and complex social hierarchies. Special emphasis will also be placed on understanding the larger patterns, shared features and the most important differences among civilizations in social life, political organization, and dominant systems of ideas.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
Through class lectures, discussion of readings, position papers and films the student will gain an accurate and greater understanding of the study of world history. This objective will be accomplished by:
- Developing a degree of independence and thought in the study of World History.
- Developing and/or improving skills in written expression.
- Developing a better understanding of the relationship between people and the historical process.
This course will be using the Blackboard Learning System.
REQUIRED TEXTS (you must have all items)
Main Textbook: The World, Volume 1 Felipe Fernandez-Armesto
**Because this course covers a large amount of material from a comparative viewpoint, keeping up with the lectures and with the textbook reading assignments will be essential to students' success. It would be best for students to read the material before lecture, since the lectures will not repeat the information found in any of the assigned reading.

Please familiarize yourself with the course site and if you have any questions please email your instructor with your concerns. Get your textbook and get started with your initial assignments. A major key to your success in this course will be keeping up with both the reading and the other assignments.
