Welcome to Biology 104. The general biology course for non-majors, with emphasis upon molecular biology, cell structure and function, energy relationships, human physiological systems (including reproductive anatomy, reproductive cycles, development, and immunity), genetics, evolution, ecological interrelationships, and discussions regarding contemporary issues. This course is offered in a distance education format, utilizing a Blackboard website. Students enrolled in the course are required to visit campus 4 times during the term for the exams.  The exams will be administered in the Testing Center on campus and the dates of the exams are identified on the course syllabus.  Effective use of both the textbook and the website are required for successful completion of the course. 3 units.

Getting Started:  Enrolled students must utilize the textbook as well as the Blackboard website in order to succeed in this course! You are responsible for all reading and assignments published on the website.  In order to help guide you in preparation for this course, I have constructed the following "tips":

    1. Realize that your grade in this course is dependent upon your performance on lecture exams and to some extent the homework assignment. To succeed in this course you must learn and understand the material and perform well on each of the four exams.
    2. Read the chapter and the lecture notes prior to doing the homework and the worksheets.
    3. There will be four homework assignments (each covering 3-6 chapters) during the semester.  Assignment one is to be turned in to me via email by the Friday of the week of the first exam etc.  If you understand the material covered in the assignment and the work sheets you should do well on the exams.  Note: the worksheets are to be used for practice and are not turned in for credit.
    4. Rather than rewrite the entire chapter for you, I have written the lecture notes as I would present a normal lecture in a traditional class.  For exams I would put most of my efforts on learning the material presented in the lecture notes available on Blackboard.  You should refer to the text for help understanding difficult concepts.
    5. Please take advantage of the message board and post questions or respond to questions asked by others and/or the instructor.
    6. Do not fall behind in this course! If you do fall behind it is very unlikely you will be able to catch up.  You must keep up with the pace of the course. It is best to spend time on this course every day... do not procrastinate until the night before an exam.
    7. Above all, please ask questions via email if you do not understand material within this course

Email your professor: Send me an email immediately confirming that you are enrolled, that you have located the Blackboard course site, and that you are getting started. Provide me with your full name and the email address you will be using during the duration of the term.
