Purpose
This course is intended to increase student's knowledge about health and focus attention on the need to arrive at one's own conclusion about how to take responsibility for your health.

Objectives

  1. Students will be able to identify the dimensions of health and recognize characteristics of each dimension.
  2. Students will understand the essential nutrients that our bodies need as well as the role and caloric value of each nutrient.
  3. Students will explain each health-related component of physical fitness and be able to identify a variety of exercises specific to each component.
  4. Students will recognize stressors in life and be able to develop positive methods to manage stress in their own personal lives.
  5. Students will identify the controllable and uncontrollable risk factors for coronary heart disease.
  6. Students will understand health problems associated with tobacco, alcohol, and drug use.
  7. Students will recognize how infectious diseases are contracted as well as how they can be prevented.

Textbook
Health: The Basics. 8th Edition, with CourseCompass access code.

You must purchase the 8th edition of Health: the Basics by Rebecca Donatelle. You must also purchase the access code separately if it does not come bundled with the textbook before you can use CourseCompass - http://www.coursecompass.com

How to Succeed in this Course
In order to succeed in this course, all students enrolled in the Distance Education section must utilize both the textbook and the CourseCompass web site. You are responsible for all reading and assignments published on the site. Use the following tips in order to guide you in preparation for this course.

  1. Read the weekly reading assignment before attempting to use the chapter aides on Course Compass.
  2. Utilize both the weekly announcements and weekly assignments section of the web site.
  3. Utilize chapter overview, chapter outlines, and key terms to help clarify information from the textbook.
  4. Take advantage of the links incorporated within the Course. These links should help you understand difficult concepts.

Accommodation: All reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate students with disabilities. A = 90% TO 100% OF ALL POSSIBLE POINTS (360 points)
B = 80% TO 89% OF ALL POSSIBLE POINTS (320 points)
C = 70% TO 79% OF ALL POSSIBLE POINTS (280 points)
D = 60% TO 69% OF ALL POSSIBLE POINTS (240 points)
F = 0% TO 59% OF ALL POSSIBLE POINTS (less than 240 points)

Mr. Hartman has taught in the areas of Health and Physical Education at Citrus College since 1987. Prior to coming to Citrus College he coached and taught on the Navajo Indian reservation at the College of Ganado in northern Arizona from 1979-1984. Mr. Hartman then coached both men's and women's basketball (as well as taught Physical Education classes) at Porterville College from 1984-1987. He received his bachelor of science degree from Brigham Young University (Physical Therapy) and graduated Valedictorian with a masters of science degree (Exercise Physiology) from BYU.

Mr. Hartman was the lead instructor of the Study Abroad Program in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1993. He was the visiting scholar to the London Study Abroad Program in 1995. In addition, Mr. Hartman was a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship and was the Scottish Junior National Basketball Coach from 1982 to 1983. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Mass emails being denied & spam blockers
If you are using AOL or Verizon as an Internet provider, mass emails may be blocked and not get through to you. This could be a problem for you since there are times that I will send a mass email to all students in the class. If you have AOL or have Spam blocking software please put my email address on your list of acceptable addresses to receive email from. If you use Verizon, please contact them to see if they can do something to let mass communication from Citrus College to get through their filter of mass emails.
