DE Online Orientation : Technical Requirements

Technical Requirements

As a distance education student, you will need the following:

  • Computer: minimum of 64 RAM with at least 56K modem (this includes any of the following: dial-up, DSL, cable or T1). See disclaimer below.
  • Internet access: a major browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 (or higher). Check your system requirements. If your ISP provides you with a browser (such as AOL) to access the Internet, you can still use Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer as your browser.
  • Software: Microsoft Word 2000 or higher; Windows 2000/XP or higher. Some instructors require additional software for their specific course. Please check the syllabus for individual courses. See disclaimer below.
  • E-mail address which will allow attachments to be sent and received. Note: spam blockers must be turned off.
  • Virus protection software is highly recommended. Some virus protection software (such as Norton AntiVirus, McAfee VirusScan) have a feature that protects against spam. If the spam blocking feature is turned on, you will need to add your instructor(s) e-mail address into your address book. For assistance, contact the distance education office.
If you use computers on campus, you will be required to scan your storage media (zip disks, floppies, USB jump drives) at a virus scanning station located in most labs.
  • Collaboration Tools (such as Virtual Classroom, Lightweight Chat): courses requiring Collaboration Tools, you will need to have Java. Check your system for Java. If you do not have Java, you may download it from either of the following sources. If you are using a firewall, make sure it is set to accept cookies.

Disclaimer
In addition to the above, some instructors may require specific computer hardware or software for their specific course. Be sure to check individual course requirements.
