Student Success Strategies
Before the semester begins:
- After reviewing the web sites of the available course offerings, select a course you believe best fits your needs and interests. Students who have a vested interest in a distance education course are more likely to successfully complete the class.
- Visit the individual course web site and check for specific requirements. Also make sure to see if there is a required course orientation.
- Establish your e-mail service if necessary.
- Obtain the necessary materials for your course (i.e. textbooks or software).
- Should you have any questions pertaining to the Distance Education Program, contact the Distance Education Office at online@citruscollege.edu or (626) 914-8831.
- Should you have any questions pertaining to the course requirements, contact your instructor. Check the course web site for contact information.
At the start of the semester:
- Do not expect your instructor to contact you. Instead, send an e-mail message to your instructor on the first day of the semester in order to check-in. You might also ask any initial questions you might have about the course within that message.
- Set up a weekly time schedule that allows you sufficient time to complete the assigned course work by required due dates. Don't procrastinate in completing your work!
Throughout the semester:
- Keep up with your assignments and complete the required work by the due dates. If you can work ahead, do so!
- Make sure to regularly meet course participation requirements. This usually involves being active in discussion board postings and attending chat sessions. Respectful communication with your classmates and instructor can provide educational and emotional support.
- Check your e-mail messages and the "Announcement" section within a course regularly (daily is best).
- Communicate with your instructor whenever you need advice or answers to questions. Instructors are available via e-mail, office hours, discussion boards, chatrooms and telephone. Check the course web site for contact information. Remember, your instructor is your best resource to help you be successful.
- Keep electronic and printed copies of all the work you submit. You are responsible for successfully submitting your assignments by the due dates, even if you encounter technical difficulties. Should you experience technical difficulties, contact your instructor to see if there are alternate delivery methods.
- Involve yourself in the distance learning environment. Individuals learn more when they take an active involvement in the learning process.
- All students are expected to conduct themselves in an ethical manner. Any occurrences of academic dishonesty or misconduct will be reported to the Dean of Students at Citrus College.
