Text: Mathematics All Around, 2nd edition, by Thomas Pirnot
Description: Rather than taking a detailed study of one branch of math, this course observes mathematics as an entire unit. Many diverse topics - logic, algebra, geometry, probability, personal finance, and others - are covered in a way that attempts to draw out the main points, while avoiding excessive detail. This class places a high emphasis on assignments, including a presentation to be given by each student. There is a website for this course that contains all the assignments as well as this syllabus and a list of presentation topics. The site is meant to serve as your guide to the course.
Grading: Your grade will be determined by your class participation and by your performance on your assignments, three exams, and an oral presentation. It will be broken down as follows:
| 3 Exams |
20% each |
| Presentation |
20% |
|
Assignments
Class Participation |
10%
10% |
When your final average is figured out, your number grade will be translated to a letter according to the following scale:
| A |
B |
C |
D |
F |
| 100-90 |
89-80 |
79-70 |
69-60 |
59-0 |
Exams: All exams must be taken on the day they are offered. In the event of unforeseen circumstances such as serious illness, leave a message with me that day via e-mail or phone explaining the situation. If no message is left, the missed exam will be counted as zero. Scientific calculators are permissible for all exams and necessary for some exams. Cheating will not be tolerated. If any student cheats on an exam, the student will receive a score of zero for that exam.
Assignments: Assignments are graded on accuracy, neatness, and creativity (when applicable). Each should be written on plain white or lined paper (not torn out of a notebook) and begin with a heading which includes your name, the title of the assignment, and the date. Each assignment will be collected at the beginning of the class meeting on which it is due. Any assignment turned in later than that will receive a 50% penalty.
Attendance: Attendance will be taken regularly. You will not be graded specifically on your attendance, but if you have excessive absences you will be dropped from the class.
Repeats: It is important that you succeed in this course. If you get a D, F, NC or W grade in this course, you may repeat it only once. If you receive a D, F, NC or W grade in this course twice, you will need to take this course at another college or file a petition with the Counseling Office. The few successful petitions each year are granted because of extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the student (see Catalog, pages 26-27, section: Repeated Courses for more details).
