    Friday, October 30, 2009

Glendora, CA (Volleyball) -- Citrus freshman Danica Lawrence recorded a game and season (for three sets) 13 kills, and posted a dominating .476 kill percentage in leading Citrus in a three set sweep over visiting Santa Monica College on Friday evening. Lawrence and company, easily set down the Corsairs, winning 25-18, 25-10, and 25-19.

In the first set the Corsairs and Lady Owls would stay even through the first 18 points of the contest. After that though, back to back kills by Lawrence would four unanswered points that would give Citrus a comfortable 13-9 lead.

Santa Monica would call a time-out and the ensuing serve from sophomore Cedestoni Salazar would go into the night, but that was all the momentum Santa Monica would be able to take away from Citrus, as they went on to score 12 of the next 20 points to win the first set by seven.

In the second frame, a pair of attack errors by the Lady Owls, an ace, and a kill by Allison Clutterbuck would give Santa Monica an early 4-0 advantage. Citrus would rally back with a vengeance though as they went on a 25-6 tear over the final 31 points, to win the second set by 15.

In the third it would be Citrus who jumped out to an early lead, running out 7-1 lead after back to back errors from the Corsairs. After a time-out from Santa Monica’s coach, the Corsairs would regroup two of the Citrus lead after a Sara Ruiz error made the score 8-6 with the Citrus still holding the line.

The Lady Owls answered with a Lindsey Mitchell kill, a Santa Monica error, and an ace by Mitchell to move the lead back to five points at 11-6. Santa Monica wouldn’t go away quietly though, as they crawled back to within a point of Citrus after three straight kills by the Corsairs made the score 16-15. Citrus didn’t panic though, as they scored nine of the final thirteen points, in securing their fifth win of the season.

Along with Lawrence, freshman Lindsey Mitchell also turned in a strong performance. Mitchell recorded her fifth “double-double” of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs. With the win, Citrus improves to 5-10 overall and 3-4 in WSC South play, while Santa Monica falls to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in conference games.

Citrus will try and continue their momentum picked up from Friday’s win, next Friday when they play host to first place Bakersfield College. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
