Citrus College Baseball Coaching Staff
Coach Gomez begins his sixth season as the Head Coach for Citrus Baseball.
Gomez spent three seasons as an assistant coach and pitching coach with the Owls from 2002-2004 before taking over the program in 2005. In that time, Gomez led the Owls pitching staff to the second lowest ERA in the state in 2003, as Citrus won the Western State Conference Championship.
Prior to coming to Citrus, Coach Gomez had spent three years as the pitching coach at his Alma Mater, Cal Poly Pomona, helping to guide the Broncos to a pair of second-place finishes in the conference tournament.
Gomez was a highly respected high school coach as well, leading Charter Oak HS to a 59-23 record from 1996-98, leading the team to league championships each year. His 1996 team was a CIF Finalist.
Before hanging up his cleats, Gomez had a long and successful playing career. He graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 1984, having been a member of their National Championship team in 1983, when he was an All-America pitcher.
Gomez was drafted in the 30th round by the Oakland A's and spent five seasons in the minor leagues, reaching Triple-A ball with the Minnessota Twins. He was a Midwest League All-Star in 1985, finishing with a 8-6 record with 20 saves and a 1.96 ERA. His career record stands at 33-29 with a 2.89 ERA and 60 saves.
Gomez, who also completed an MA in Exercise Science from Cal Poly resides in Claremont with his three children, Justin, Dana and Cory.
Assistant Coach Bill Viverto
Bill Viverto has head coaching experience that dates back to 1968. Assistant Coach Viverto got his start playing for Mt. SAC from 1961-62. Viverto received his AA while attending Mt. SAC, before playing for the Independent League in Buffalo, New York from 1962-63. After finishing his playing career Viverto came back to California and earned his BS from Cal Poly Pomona in 1970.
Along with his playing experience Viverto has been on the local high school scene for over 20 years. Viverto spent 5 years at Covina High School, 5 years at Don Bosco Tech, and most recently 10 years at Whittier High School as the head coach from 1997-2006. In 2004-2005, Whittier won back to back Del Rio League Championships. Prior to coaching high school Viverto spent two seasons, 1982-83, on Mt. SAC’s coaching staff.
Viverto’s success hasn’t stopped there as he has been a head coach on the local scene, coaching the American Legion World Series Champions in 1985, Mickey Mantle World Series Champions in 1994, and the first-ever youth team to be inducted into the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, the Colt World Champions of 1970.
Assistant Coach Miguel Sanchez
Coach Miguel Sanchez is in his third season on the Fighting Owls staff, and his first since the 2005 season. Coach Sanchez had a promising collegiate career derailed playing one year at Arizona State University before having Tommy John surgery.
Coach Sanchez played four stellar seasons for Bishop Amat High School. While at Bishop Amat, Sanchez played for the 2001 CIF Championship squad. Sanchez also earned All-State, 1st team All-San Gabriel Valley, and Pitcher of the Year honors.
Coach Sanchez spent the last season coaching at Los Altos High School, where he served as the pitching coach. As a member of the Los Altos staff, Sanchez played an important role in helping lead the Conquerors to the CIF semi-finals.
Along with his high school coaching experience, Coach Sanchez also spent one year as the head coach of the UCLA Softball Club team in 2007. A resident of Los Angeles, Sanchez is currently working on his bachelor’s degree at Cal State Fullerton.
Assistant Coach Marcos Aldrete
Coach Marcos Aldrete begins his second season on the Fighting Owls staff. Coach Aldrete will handle the outfield as well as serve as the third base coach for this years team. Aldrete comes to Citrus after playing two seasons at nearby Rio Hondo College.
While with the Roadrunners, Aldrete was known for his clutch hitting recording six career walk-off hits and four pinch hit home-runs. Prio to Rio Hondo, Aldrete played four solid seasons at Whittier High School. Aldrete was a member of the 2004 team that went 16-0 in league, the only team to go undefeated in school history. Aldrete also left Whittier holding the school record for doubles and runs scored.
Still a resident of Whittier, Coach Aldrete is currently working on his bachelor’s degree at Cal State University Los Angeles.
